Declaration of the International Coalition \u201eYES to Development \u2013 NO to Opencast mines<\/strong> to prevent building new opencast lignite mines in Europe and to drive European countries transformation from fossil fuels to renewable energy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We, undersigned representatives of associations, social \norganizations, local governments, civil initiatives and individuals have\n decided to form the International Coalition \u201eYES to Development \u2013 NO to\n Opencast mines\u201d to prevent building new opencast lignite mines in \nEurope and to reduce negative effects of existing mines and lignite \npower plants, and to drive transformation of European countries from \nfossil fuels to renewable energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a matter of fact, mines and power plants based on lignite \ncombustion have negative impact on the environment and endanger human \nand animal health. Lignite energy technology will be gradually removed \nfrom the market as a consequence of necessary environmental regulation \nand growing public opposition. Twenty-first century is the century of \nrenewable resources. Therefore countries which do not modernize their \nenergy sector on time will suffer significant economic loss and will \nrisk irreversible effects on citizens\u2019 health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, the European Union states and many other developed countries \nimplement policies aiming to reduce, and finally eliminate fossil fuels,\n focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency. This strategy is \nthe only real alternative that can provide employment, create \ntechnological innovation, protect local environment and global climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Coalition \u201eYES to Development \u2013 NO to Opencast Mines\u201d is an \ninternational agreement of activists respecting the principles of \nsustainable development, environmental protection and fundamental human \nrights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main objectives of the International Coalition \u201eYES to Development \u2013 NO to Opencast Mines\u201d are:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Co-operation of international organizations and institutions which \nwork in the field of lignite issues, sustainable development, renewable \nenergy and climate protection<\/li>
  2. Common, coordinated opposition to plans of new opencast lignite \nmines and common work to reduce the impact of existing mines and lignite\n power plants<\/li>
  3. Exchange of experience and creation of a multilateral forum to discuss issues of energy sector transformation and coal industry<\/li>
  4. Dialogue for renewable energy and transition to low-carbon and \nlow-emission economy and for \u201egreen\u201d employment related to all sectors \nof energy<\/li>
  5. Improvement of countries\u2019 energy security by investing in renewable \nenergy and energy efficiency, as well as introduction of alternative, \nnon-invasive forms of natural resources management<\/li>
  6. Support for all initiatives aimed at social development in harmony \nwith nature and preservation of natural and cultural heritage for the \nbenefit of future generations, as well as respect for human and civil \nrights<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n
